Harrods is a huge, famous department store in Knightsbridge, a wealthy part of central London. Rich and fashionable people shop there, and so do visitors who mainly want to look: it sells expensive clothes, food, gifts, and all kinds of unusual luxury goods. It is known for its food halls, its green bags, and a grand, almost theatrical style of shopping. Older learner books often say it is owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed. Though actually, he bought it in the 1980s and sold it in 2010 to Qatar’s royal family, so that line is out of date; the shop is still called Harrods. It began in the 1800s as a smaller grocer’s shop run by Charles Henry Harrod and grew into one of the best-known stores in the world. The name looks like a plural, but it is just the store’s name (from Harrod’s, “Harrod’s shop”).
