Harlot is an old word for a prostitute, a woman who sells sex. In the Bible and in old plays you meet it often. On the street today it sounds like an insult from another century — hard, , and aimed at women. Use prostitute if you need a plain modern word; sex worker is what many people say now when they want to be more respectful. Hundreds of years ago the French word meant a tramp or a good-for-nothing, not only a woman who sells sex; the narrower, nastier English sense grew later. Where French got it is not clear. Leave the word in old books.

組成From Middle English harlot, from Old French harlot / herlot / arlot, a vagabond or tramp. The deeper origin is obscure. It may go back to old Germanic words for a warrior or a fellow, but that is not sure.
