This is an old, name for a cleft lip: before birth the top lip did not join fully, so there is a split. English speakers who care do not use harelip now. Doctors say cleft lip; families say cleft lip. The word copies the look of a hare’s top lip, which is split, and that is why it hurts — it turns a person’s face into an animal joke. You may meet it in old books. There is no kind way to use it today. If you need the idea, say cleft lip.
