In shops and with furniture, hardwood is the strong, heavy wood from trees such as oak, used for tables, floors, and doors. The everyday pair is hardwood against softwood (pine and other cone trees). Though actually, the name does not mean “wood that is hard.” It first named trees whose seeds have a hard coat — the broad-leaf trees. is a hardwood, but you can press it with a thumb; some pine is tougher than that. Speakers who do not work with trees almost always hear “hard,” and talk as if that were the whole story. It is the usual story. It is not the careful one.
