A hardcover is a book with a strong, stiff cover. This is the word American English prefers. British English more often says . In a shop or a library, hardcover and point to the same kind of book: the opposite of a paperback. You can use it as a noun (I bought the hardcover) or before another noun (a hardcover book, a hardcover edition). Hardcovers cost more and stand up better on a shelf. Though actually, the story inside is the same; only the cover and the price change. Some people it in catalogues to HC, but should say hardcover.
