If you are hard-pressed, life is squeezing you: too many problems, and not enough money, time, or help. Hard-pressed families may be short of cash; a hard-pressed hospital may have too many patients. News writers like this word. A very common shape is hard-pressed to plus a verb: I'd be hard-pressed to name a better one means you would find that difficult — you probably cannot. Though actually, it does not always mean you are poor. A person with money can still be hard-pressed for time. And the to pattern is not “someone is pressing you to do it.” It is “you would have a hard time doing it.” Compared with broke or struggling, hard-pressed sounds a little more like a newspaper, not like a chat between friends. It is not about pressing with your hands.
