Hard-edged writing, comedy, or film deals with difficult subjects, or criticises people sharply, in a way that may offend. A hard-edged report does not the ugly parts; a hard-edged joke does not try to be kind. The word is about style and tone, not about a knife, and you will meet it most in reviews and journalism. It is fairly strong: it says the work has bite, and that some people will not like that.
