Harare is the capital city of Zimbabwe, in southern Africa. It is the country's main city for government, business, and universities. Before independence it was called Salisbury, a British name; the city was Harare in 1982. Though actually, students still meet the old name Salisbury in older books and maps: same city, colonial name. The name comes from Shona Harare, supposedly from haarari, it doesn't sleep, said of a waterfall that kept moving through the night. Say Ha-RAH-ray, not horror.
