Hapsburg is an English spelling of the name of a great European royal family. They ruled in Austria from 1278 to 1918, and in Spain from 1516 to 1700. The German spelling, which history books use more and more, is Habsburg: same family, different letters. Though actually, English used to write Hapsburg with a p because that is how the name sounded to English ears; the b is the German way, not a second family. Students of history meet them as the house at the centre of the old Austrian, later Austro-Hungarian, empire, and as the family of Charles V, who held Spain and much of Europe at once. The name began as a castle name in what is now Switzerland; it is not a country you can visit under that name today. Do not mix it up with Hamburg, which is a German city.
