    A hansom was a small taxi pulled by one horse, used mainly in the 1800s, especially in London. It had two wheels, and the driver sat up high at the back, not in front — that is the shape people mean by hansom cab. You will meet it in old novels and films, not in the street today. Though actually, the spelling sits right beside handsome (“good-looking”), and students often read it as that word. They are not related. A hansom is a kind of carriage; handsome is about looks.
