Hanoverian means of, or supporting, the British royal line that came from Hanover — a place in what is now Germany — and then ruled Britain from 1714 to 1901. The first of them was George I. People also used the word for someone who backed that family, especially in the 1700s, when others still wanted the old Stuart line. Those people were Jacobites; the other side were Hanoverians. Though actually, the same word can just mean “from Hanover,” and there is even a well-known kind of horse by that name — but this sense is the kings-and-queens one. After 1901 the family name in Britain changed; they later became the House of Windsor, still on the throne today. It is a formal, history-book word, not everyday talk.
