Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. It sits in the north of the country, on a wide river called the Red River. The government is there, and the city is old — people have lived on that river for a very long time. Though actually, when English speakers talk about Vietnam’s “big city,” they sometimes mean Ho Chi Minh City in the south (the one older people still call ). That city is larger and more commercial. Hanoi is the capital; it is not the whole country, and it is not . In English the name is a proper noun, so it takes a capital letter.
