A hangman is a person whose job, in the old punishment system, was to kill a criminal by hanging them — a rope around the neck, the body dropped. It is a grim, historical job-word, not a joke in this meaning. Many countries no longer do this; where they still do, the title may be different. The word is hang + -man, and it is already in Middle English. Though actually, a lot of students meet hangman first as a paper game: you guess letters, and a little drawing of a hanging person grows when you are wrong. That game borrowed the dark job. This entry is the job itself.
