A -on is someone who stays close to a rich, famous, or important person, not mainly from friendship, but because they hope something will fall their way: tickets, money, introductions, a little reflected light. The feeling of the word is on purpose; if you call someone a -on, you are saying they are using the other person. It is a little old-fashioned, but still clear. You often meet it in the plural. Though actually, it is not hang + on as in a clothes . It is the person-noun of the verb hang on: to hold on, to stay attached, to not let go.
