    Hangdog describes a look on someone's face: sorry, ashamed, a bit beaten, as if they know they have done wrong. We usually say a hangdog expression or a hangdog look — the head a little down, the eyes not meeting yours. You might see it on a child who broke a cup, or on an adult who has been caught in a lie. The word is a little old-fashioned and a little literary, but people still use it because the picture is so clear. Though actually, it is not about hanging a dog. It is hang + dog: the image is a dog with its head hanging, guilty and sad.
