A hang-up is a worry or a shy feeling that sits in you and will not go, even when there is no strong reason for it. Someone may have a hang-up about their accent, their body, money, or speaking in front of a group. Other people often cannot see why it matters; that is part of the meaning. The word is informal. You will hear it from older speakers especially, though young people still use it. Though actually, hang up as a verb is also what you do to a phone when the call is over — that is a different use. This noun is the feeling, usually written with a : a hang-up. If someone is hung up on a thing, they have a hang-up about it.
