A handgun is a small gun you hold in one hand when you fire it. Pistols and are both handguns. A rifle or a shotgun is not: those you hold with both hands and brace against your body. The word is more American; British speakers often say pistol for the same kind of weapon, or just gun. Though actually, gun is the wide everyday word, and handgun is the more exact one when you need to separate it from long guns. In many places, including Taiwan, ordinary people do not own these; you meet the word in news, films, and games.
