A handcar is a small, open vehicle that runs on railway tracks. It has no engine. People stand on it and push large handles up and down; that pumping turns the wheels and the car rolls along the rails. Railway workers used them to check the track and to travel a short way along the line. You will meet the word more in American English and in films or stories about old railways; ordinary passengers do not ride a handcar. Though actually, later little rail cars got small engines, but handcar still points to the one you work with your hands.
