Hampstead is a part of North London known for large, expensive houses and for writers, , and well-off people who have long liked to live there. In the middle of it is Hampstead Heath: a wide stretch of grass, woods, and ponds, more wild than a tidy city park. People walk there, swim, and look out over London. Though actually, when say “Hampstead” they often mean a whole mood as well as a place — leafy, , and not cheap. The name is from Old English hām, a homestead, and stede, a place.
