If an actor’s performance is hammy, they put on too much feeling, in a way that looks fake. The tears are too big, the voice is too loud, the face works too hard — you can see the acting, and you stop believing the person. It is an informal, slightly teasing word from theatre and film talk, not a kind review. You can also call the actor a ham, and hammy is the adjective from that. It is about style, not about talent in every case: a serious actor can still have a hammy night, and some old comedies want that extra size on purpose. Though actually, it is not a compliment when people use it now; it means ‘too much, and not true’. It has nothing to do with the taste of ham, and it is not a word for someone who likes meat.
