A hallmark is a clear, typical feature that shows the true quality or character of something — 'kindness is a hallmark of good teaching'. The word actually comes from a real historical practice: gold and silver items in Britain were stamped with an official mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in London, to prove they were genuinely good quality — that stamp was the original 'hallmark'.
