In this sense Halifax is a British bank — a high-street name you still see in the UK on shops, cards, and in the news. Though actually, before 1996 it was not a bank at all: it was the country's biggest building society, a members' club for saving money and borrowing to buy a house. Then it became a bank. The name is the town in Yorkshire where the business grew up. Later it sat inside bigger UK banking groups, but the shop-front word many people still say is Halifax. Always write a capital H: it is a name, not a kind of bank.
