A half-hour is a stretch of time thirty minutes long. From two o’clock to half past two is one half-hour. People say a half-hour wait, a half-hour lesson, a half-hour programme on TV. Though actually, when we talk about waiting or arriving, the everyday phrase is often “half an hour” (with an): I’ll be there in half an hour. The half-hour likes to sit in front of another noun, like a label: a half-hour meeting. Both mean the same thirty minutes. On clocks and , the half-hour is also the :30 mark — the 10:30 train sits on the half-hour after ten.
