A half-holiday is a day when children — and sometimes workers — are free in the afternoon, after a morning of school or work. In British school language it is not a full day off: you still go in for the morning. Older British school stories talk about a half-holiday after a match, or on a Saturday. Though actually, many schools now just say a half day, or they finish early. American English almost never uses half-holiday; they say a half day. The word can sound a little old-fashioned, like something a ’s school would print on a notice. Holiday here means a day free from school or work, not a trip.
