    This is a very offensive word for a person whose parents are of different . In older American English it was used especially of someone with one white parent and one Native American parent, as if a human were an animal “breed.” Do not use it, even if you hear it in an old film or a history book. The harm is in the word itself, not only in a rude tone of voice. Say mixed-race or , or — better — name the person’s actual background if they are happy to share it.
