1. 1

Halcyon is almost always found in the phrase halcyon days (or halcyon years): a time in the past that feels calm, safe, and happy when you look back. People say it when they are a little wistful — the quiet years before the hard ones started. It is a , rather formal word; you will not hear it much from young people in the street. The old story behind it is a : in Greek myth the bird nested on the sea, and the gods kept the still for those days. So the word still carries “calm” as well as “happy then.” You would not usually call a person halcyon.
