If meat is halal, it comes from an animal killed in the way Islamic law allows: with a blessing, a clean cut, and the blood drained. Muslims who keep this rule look for a halal butcher or a restaurant that says it is halal. People also stretch the word, quite normally, to any food, drink, or even money business that Islam permits — so a “halal” shop is not only about meat, though meat is the sense you will hear first. You can say halal chicken (adjective) or we only eat halal (as a kind of noun). It is a plain, respectful word, not slang; the paired idea for “not allowed” is haram.
