1. 1

A hairnet is a very thin net you pull over the hair so the hair stays together and does not fall out. You see it in kitchens and food factories, because a stray hair in food is a real problem. Dancers, nurses in older photos, and some factory jobs use them too. Some are almost invisible; some are thicker and you can see the mesh. It is not a fashion hat, though actually in the mid-1900s a nicer hairnet could also be part of a tidy “going out” look. Today the word mostly says “work and hygiene,” not “pretty.” It keeps hair in; it does not style it the way a clip or a band might. One hairnet, two hairnets. People put one on over a bun or a . It is ordinary, slightly technical English — a thing with a job.
