Haircloth is a rough cloth woven from animal hair, often horsehair. It feels stiff and scratchy, not like a soft jumper. Tailors have used it inside coats and suits to help a collar or chest keep its shape; furniture makers have used it on chairs. Older religious stories also talk about a painful shirt made of this kind of cloth — English has a separate word, hairshirt, for that garment. Haircloth is the material; the shirt is the thing you wear. You will almost never hear this in everyday talk about fashion or washing your hair. It belongs to workshops, old houses, and history books. It is not “cloth with a hair pattern,” and it is not the same as a hairbrush. The hair here is the fibre the cloth is made from.
