Hair-splitting is when people argue about tiny differences that do not really change the big picture — as if they were trying to cut one hair into two. It often sounds a little impatient: you are saying the other person is being too . You can use it as a noun (Let’s stop the hair-splitting) or before another noun (hair-splitting distinctions). It is more at home in meetings, essays, and legal talk than in the night market. It is not a compliment.
