Haight-Ashbury is a neighborhood in San Francisco, on the west coast of the United States. It takes its name from two streets that cross there: Haight Street and Ashbury Street. In the 1960s, young people who wanted a freer, more colorful life — the people newspapers called hippies — gathered in that area. Music, long hair, and talk of peace and love became famous around it, especially in 1967, the year people still call the Summer of Love. It is a real district you can walk through today; shops and visitors still remember that time, though the city around it has changed. People often shorten it to “the Haight.” It is a place name, so we write it with capital letters.
