Hacking, in the sense that worries people in the news, is secretly getting into other people’s computers or changing the information there, usually without permission. The someone who does it is a hacker; the doing is hacking — though headlines sometimes blur the two, as if hacking itself were a person. In ordinary news language it sounds criminal: stolen passwords, opened mail, a company shut down. Though actually, inside the computer world an older, kinder meaning is still alive: hacking as clever, playful, sometimes perfectly legal problem-solving with machines. Older programmers may bristle when every break-in is called hacking. For most students, the news meaning is the one they will meet. It is informal, modern, and a little loud in headlines. Life hacking (little tricks for daily life) is a later, softer stretch of the same root, and not this sense.
組成hack + -ing. From Middle English forms equivalent to hack + -ing. The computer sense is a later use of hack, not a new spelling.
