A hacienda is a large farm or country estate in the Spanish-speaking world, especially Mexico and parts of Latin America: not a small family field, but a big piece of land with a main house, workers, and often cattle or crops. English borrowed the Spanish word and kept its flavour, so we use it for that kind of place, not for a farm in Taiwan or England. The tidy picture is “a big farm.” The messier truth is that historically a hacienda often meant land in a few hands, with many labourers, and sometimes a hard social story behind the pretty house. Tourist English sometimes shrinks it to “a handsome old ranch house,” which is only the front door of the meaning.
