If a drug or an activity is habit-forming, it makes you want to keep taking it or doing it, again and again, until it is hard to stop. Doctors use it about medicine — some sleeping pills, some . People also stretch it to games, sugar, phones, and shopping: “This puzzle is habit-forming.” It is a warning word, a little softer and more polite than addictive. A label might say “may be habit-forming” when they do not want to shout that it can make you an addict. Though actually, for strong drugs, addictive is the blunter and often fairer word; habit-forming can sound as if it is only a small habit.
組成habit (something you do often without thinking) + forming (making, building). A hyphen joins them into one describing word.
