Ha is the little sound you make when something clicks, or when you catch someone out. “Ha! So that’s where it was.” It can also be a short laugh, a sound of triumph, or a rather “I was right.” It is informal. You see it more on the page — comics, messages, novels — than you hear it said slowly in real life; in speech it is just a quick laugh or a surprised “hah.” Though actually “ha ha” (said twice) is the ordinary laugh in writing, and a single “Ha!” often feels sharper: surprise, discovery, or “got you.” It is a sound we write down, not a verb you change.

組成A sound-word, attested from the early 1300s, of onomatopoeic origin — people made the noise first; the spelling followed. Many languages have a similar ha because the mouth just does that.
