H5N1 is a kind of bird flu. It mostly lives in birds, especially chickens and ducks, but it can jump to people, and when it does it is often very dangerous — many of those who catch it die. That is why governments watch it so carefully, and why you see it in the news when chickens are culled or a human case appears. Ordinary talk in Taiwan is usually 禽流感; the letters H5N1 are what scientists and headlines use when they mean this particular strain, not bird flu in general. Though actually there are other bird-flu strains too; H5N1 is just the one that first made the world very afraid.
