Gypsum is a soft white rock. You can scratch it with a . People heat it and grind it, and then it becomes plaster of Paris — the powder you mix with water to coat walls, to make a cast for a broken arm, or to shape models. Some indoor wall boards are made with it too. English likes to keep gypsum for the rock and plaster for the stuff you spread, though actually in daily talk people blur them. It is a material, not a brand.

組成Borrowed as a whole word, not built from English pieces. From Latin gypsum, from Ancient Greek γύψος (gúpsos). The same old word also gave English gesso, by another path.
