A gymnast is a person who does gymnastics and competes — floor work, bars, beam, vault, and the like. It is not just someone who likes to train. A gymnast is the athlete in that sport. The Greek story behind the word is a little surprising: gymnos meant “naked”, because athletes in the old Greek world trained without clothes. From that came a verb for training the body, and then gymnastes for a trainer of athletes. English borrowed the word in a learned way, so the family still sits with gymnastics and gymnasium.
