- 1
A gymkhana is a sporting day where people on horses — often children on ponies — race, jump, and play riding games. It is more of a fun competition than a grand race meeting. You will hear this word in Britain and in other Commonwealth countries. Though actually, the word has a wider life than that. In parts of South Asia a gymkhana can mean a sports club or a sports meeting, not only horses. In some places people even use it for a driving test of skill in a car. The sense a ’s dictionary usually wants, though, is the horse event. The word did not start from gym. It comes from a Hindustani word for a ball court. English later shaped the spelling so it looks like gymnastics. That look is a bit of a trick.
馬術競技會
組成From Hindustani gend (“ball”) + khana (“court” / “house”). English later reshaped the word under the influence of gymnastics and gymnasium.
