Gwent was a county in south-east Wales. It is not a county on the map in the same way now. In 1996 it was split into smaller areas: Monmouthshire, Newport, Caerphilly, and Blaenau Gwent. You still hear the old name in Blaenau Gwent, and in names like Gwent Police.
Though actually, some notes mix this up with . was a different former county, in south-west Wales. Gwent was the south-east one, and those four areas — Monmouthshire, Newport, Caerphilly, and Blaenau Gwent — are what Gwent became.
The name is much older than the late-twentieth-century county. It comes from Welsh, and before that from a Roman town called Venta Silurum.
