When a voice or a sound is guttural, it seems to come from deep in the throat, not from the front of the mouth. A growl is guttural. Some laughs are. People also use it for speech that sounds rough or .
Though actually, English speakers use this word rather loosely. They may call a whole language “guttural” just because it has sounds they are not used to — German and Arabic often get this label. That is more of a feeling than a careful description. Language teachers prefer more exact words for where in the mouth a sound is made.
It is a somewhat adjective. You will meet it in writing more than in everyday chat. Linguists sometimes use it as a noun too, for a consonant, but in ordinary English it mostly describes a voice or a sound.
組成Latin guttur (“throat”) + -ālis (an ending meaning “of” or “relating to”). It came into English through New Latin and Middle French.
