    A guttersnipe, in old and rather cruel English, is a child judged dirty, , and badly behaved, and said to come from a poor home. Gutter is the filthy channel at the edge of the street; snipe is a bird of wet, muddy places — the insult stitches those together and looks down from above. Newspapers and novels from a century ago used it freely. Today it sounds snobbish and dated. You may meet it in older stories, or as a joke, but it is not a kind word to put on a real child.
