1. 1

A gutless person lacks courage or determination: they will not take a risk, or stand up, when it counts. In informal English, guts is courage — the feeling in your belly that lets you go forward — so gutless is “without that.” It is a harsh everyday insult, more spoken than carefully written. People also throw it at a plan or a film that plays safe and will not commit. Calling a real person gutless will land as a slap. The older picture (a body with the insides taken out) sits behind the slang, but that is not how we use it now.
