A gusset is a small extra piece of material sewn into clothes to make one place stronger, wider, or easier to move in. Makers put them under the arm, at the crotch of trousers or , in a bag, or in a tight corner of a shoe — anywhere the cloth would otherwise pull and tear. You may never notice one until you look inside. People who build with wood or metal use the same idea: a small plate that holds a joint firm. The clothes sense is the everyday one. It is a workshop word, not a word for chatting about fashion.

組成From Middle English gusset, gysset, from Old French gosset, gousset (“the hollow of the armpit”), a smaller form of gose, gosse (“bean pod, hull, husk”). The patch sits in a hollow, like a little pod.
