A gurney is a long, narrow bed on wheels that hospital staff use to move a sick person from one place to another — along a corridor, into a ward, or from an ambulance into the building. The person usually lies flat on it. In American English this is the ordinary hospital word. British English more often says trolley for the same thing, so a British student may never have heard gurney except on American television. It is not a stretcher you carry by the handles, and it is not a shopping cart. You would not use it for a regular bed that stays in a room.

組成Origin unknown. It may come from Gurney cab, a horse-drawn cab on wheels named after Theodore Gurney, an American credited with making and patenting one around 1883. The surname Gurney is Norman, from Gournay-en-Bray in France; sometimes also from a place in Devon.
