The Gurkhas are soldiers from Nepal who serve in special units of the British Army. In British English, the Gurkhas often means those famous regiments — known for toughness, loyalty, and a curved knife called a kukri. Nepal has its own Gurkha soldiers too; the word is older than the British units. Dictionaries sometimes say they are small but very brave. That is the old British picture of them, said with respect, but small is a stereotype from the outside, not a fair fact about a person. People do loosely call any Nepalese soldier a Gurkha; the tighter meaning is this fighting tradition and these units. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter.
