The gunwale is the top edge of the side of a boat — the rail you might rest a hand on, or sit on in a small boat. On old this strong top plank was where the guns sat, which is how the word was born; on a canoe today there are no guns at all, but we still use the same name. People who work on boats often say it as , which does not sound like the spelling. It is a boat word. You almost never hear it on land unless someone is talking about a canoe, a , or a fishing boat. It is not a gun, and it is not a whale, though the letters rather invite you to think so.

組成From Middle English gonnewalle, from gonne (gun) + wale. A wale is a raised plank along a ship’s side. The gunwale was the wale that held the guns; now it just means that top edge. Same pieces as gun + wale.
