Gunnery is the skill and practice of large, heavy guns — cannon, artillery, the big guns on a — and of aiming them well. It is not the word for shooting a pistol or a hunting rifle; those are shooting or . Armies and navies teach gunnery; a gunnery officer runs the guns; gunnery practice is when they fire for training. The word feels military and a little old-fashioned in civilian life. You meet it in history, war reporting, and training-school names. Though actually, in the US Marines, Gunnery Sergeant is a rank, often to “Gunny” in speech — a friendly use of the sound, not a second meaning of this skill-word.
