A gunman is a person who uses a gun to do a crime — to rob, to threaten, to kill, or to shoot into a crowd. News stories say “the gunman” when the shooter is not yet named. This is not the word for a soldier, a police officer, or a hunter, even though they also hold guns; those people have job names. Gunman points at crime, or at a sudden armed attack in a public place. It is a news and police word, fairly serious, not slang. Though actually, the person may be a woman; papers still often write gunman, and gunwoman is rare. A hired killer may be called a gunman too.
