Gungy describes something dirty, sticky, and a bit disgusting — wet muck, old food, slime, the stuff you do not want on your hands. It is an adjective: a gungy floor, gungy hair, a gungy cloth. The stuff itself is gunge; something covered in it, or like it, is gungy. Informal British English, the kind of word a child or a tired parent uses in the kitchen, not a word for a science report. In American English you are more likely to hear gooey or grimy. It has nothing to do with gung-ho, and nothing to do with guns. Built from gunge + -y (having that quality); gunge is said to come from Hindi गंज (gañj).
